Project Description

The Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Affiliated Tribes - MHA Nation commissioned Schutz Foss Architects to design their Tribal Nation Capital building. The 2-part/2 phase project includes the 41,398 sf Tribal Administrative Headquarters and also a 17,441 sf. Government Support Buildings that will house the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The capital building sits on the Northern Shore of the Missouri River in New Town, North Dakota. The building design has been created to represent the numerous tribal cultural elements including the importance of the earth shelter.

The project is being delivered under the Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) process. Construction has begun with site grading, concrete foundation/slab and structural steel package previously awarded. Important to the function of this large building is the flow of people and information between the Tribe and Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also essential is for each of the six geographic reservation “sections” to have a local presence in this capital building for purposes of conducting tribal business.

The Chairman requests prior to design:
• We want to have a building that respects our Cultural beliefs.
• We want a building that is functional and simple.
• We would like the Tribal Chambers to overlook the Missouri River to the South.
• We want to be proud of our presence.

The Design Team succeeded in these goals and construction is underway.
